The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Musical

F. Scott Fitzgerald's satirical short story "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" appeared in Collier's magazine on 27 May 1922. The tale of a man born old who grows younger with each passing year was a playful inversion of the American obsession with youth. Fitzgerald himself was dismissive of it, but the premise lodged in the cultural imagination and refused to leave.

Thirteen nominations, three Oscars; Fitzgerald's forgotten story suddenly had the world's attention.

David Fincher's film adaptation, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, earned thirteen Academy Award nominations and won three. The film expanded Fitzgerald's slim story into a sweeping New Orleans epic. More importantly for what followed, it proved the premise could carry emotional weight far beyond satire. A generation discovered Benjamin Button not through Fitzgerald's prose, but through Pitt's prosthetics.

On 15 May 2019, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button premiered at Southwark Playhouse. Writer and director Jethro Compton, alongside composer Darren Clark, had reimagined Fitzgerald's story entirely. Gone was Baltimore; in its place, the Cornish coast. Gone was orchestral grandeur; in its place, a folk score performed by actor-musicians wielding guitars, fiddles and accordions. The intimate staging, with audiences seated around the action, created something raw and immediate.

Eighteen months of empty theatres, and they spent every hour sharpening the show.

Covid-19 shuttered London's theatres for the best part of eighteen months. For a small-scale production still building its reputation, the timing was brutal. But Compton and Clark used the enforced pause to refine the material, tightening the book and developing the score. The show that would eventually return was sharper for the wait.

Sold out every seat; the transfer rumours started before the curtain had barely fallen.

The musical returned to Southwark Playhouse in a revised production that sold out its entire run. Word of mouth had done its work during the intervening years, and audiences arrived knowing they were in for something unusual. Critics who had admired the 2019 original noted the improvements: a tighter second act, stronger ensemble work, and a score that had matured alongside its creators. Transfer rumours began almost immediately.

The production transferred to the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End, the intimate 444-seat venue on West Street that had previously been home to The Mousetrap for over two decades. The small house suited the show perfectly. Benjamin Button was never designed for a 1,500-seat barn; its power lies in proximity, in catching the breath of the performers and the grain of the folk instruments.

At the 2024 Olivier Awards, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button won Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music. For a show that had started life in a fringe venue with no star names and no major producer, it was a remarkable validation. The folk-musical from Cornwall had beaten the big-budget competition on the strength of its storytelling and its score alone.

From passion project to West End fixture; the show, much like its subject, only gets more compelling with age.

The production continues at the Ambassadors Theatre, its reputation now firmly established. What began as a passion project by two relatively unknown creatives has become one of the most talked-about musicals in London. The show's journey mirrors its subject matter in a way: it arrived looking nothing like what people expected, and grew more compelling with time.
