The Queen's Club Championships is the oldest grass court tournament in the world still played at its original venue. Founded in 1886 in West Kensington, it has served as the traditional curtain-raiser to Wimbledon for well over a century, drawing the finest players in the game to its intimate, garden-party setting. Now an ATP 500 event presented by HSBC, the tournament remains one of the most coveted titles on the grass court calendar.

The world's first multi-purpose sports complex, and it opened with a lawn tennis championship in its very first year.
The Queen's Club was founded in 1886 in West Kensington, London, becoming the world's first multi-purpose sports complex. Named in honour of Queen Victoria, the club hosted its inaugural lawn tennis championships that same year. The venue offered 28 outdoor grass courts alongside facilities for real tennis, rackets, and other sports, establishing itself as the sporting heart of fashionable west London.
Wimbledon's favourite warm-up fixture since the 1890s, and it has held that place ever since.
By the 1890s, the Queen's Club Championships had cemented their place in the London social calendar. The tournament attracted the leading amateur players of the day and served as the principal warm-up fixture for Wimbledon, a role it has never relinquished. The club's location in the heart of west London made it easily accessible to the capital's sporting elite, and its grass courts were considered among the finest in England.

The dawn of the Open Era in 1968 brought professional players to Queen's for the first time, and the tournament's stature grew rapidly. By the early 1970s, the Championships had become one of the most prestigious grass court showcases outside of Wimbledon itself. Stars such as John Newcombe, Ken Rosewall, and Ilie Nastase graced the courts, and the intimate setting of the club gave spectators a proximity to world-class tennis that larger venues simply could not match.
Four titles, one favourite tournament; McEnroe's bond with Queen's was as fierce as his backhand.
John McEnroe won his first Queen's Club title in 1979, beginning an extraordinary association with the tournament. He would go on to claim the singles title four times (1979, 1981, 1984, 1985), and his fierce, combative style became synonymous with the Championships. McEnroe's love affair with Queen's was genuine; he repeatedly described it as one of his favourite tournaments anywhere in the world, and his presence helped elevate the tournament's profile internationally.
A teenager lost the Queen's final; a fortnight later, he was the youngest Wimbledon champion in history.
In 1985, Boris Becker reached the Queen's Club final as a 17-year-old, losing to Johan Kriek. Just weeks later, he stunned the tennis world by winning Wimbledon, becoming the youngest men's singles champion in the tournament's history. The connection between Queen's form and Wimbledon success was never more dramatically illustrated. Becker would return to win the Queen's title in 1987, further cementing the tournament's reputation as the ultimate proving ground for the grass court season.
Five Queen's titles across seven years; few players have made a grass-court fortress of one venue quite like Murray.
Andy Murray won his first Queen's Club title in 2009, defeating James Blake in the final. It was the start of a remarkable run that would see the Scot lift the trophy five times in total (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016), making him the most successful player in the modern history of the Championships. Murray's dominance at Queen's became a reliable barometer for his Wimbledon prospects; in 2013 and 2016, his Queen's titles preceded deep runs at SW19.
Queen's was never just a warm-up; the ATP 500 upgrade made it official.
In 2015, the Queen's Club Championships were upgraded from ATP 250 to ATP 500 status, reflecting the tournament's prestige and the quality of its fields. The elevation brought higher ranking points, increased prize money, and a stronger commitment from top players. It was formal recognition of what the tennis world already knew: Queen's was no ordinary warm-up occasion, but a major title in its own right.
Alcaraz claimed Queen's in 2024, then came back and did it all over again in 2025.
HSBC took over as title sponsor in 2024, with the tournament's commercial name becoming the HSBC Championships while retaining its historic identity as the Queen's Club Championships. The partnership brought renewed investment and global visibility to an experience that had already been growing steadily. Carlos Alcaraz won the 2024 edition, then successfully defended his title in 2025, confirming his status as the dominant force on grass heading into Wimbledon.
