Two Lancashire clubs meet for the first time.

Two Lancashire mill towns and Football League founding members, Newton Heath and Burnley finally shared a First Division fixture in 1892-93 after years in separate divisions.
Newton Heath (as Manchester United were then known) and Burnley first faced each other in the Football League's First Division during the 1892-93 season. Both clubs were founding members of the Football League in 1888, though they initially competed in different divisions. Burnley had been established in 1882, Newton Heath in 1878. The fixture quickly became a regular Lancashire derby, rooted in the industrial rivalry between the two mill towns.
