The first international rugby match in history takes place.

Four thousand spectators watched 40 men invent a rivalry that has refused to quieten for over 150 years.
On 27 March 1871, Scotland and England met at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh in what is recognised as the first international rugby football match ever played. Scotland won by one goal and one try to England's one try, in front of around 4,000 spectators. The teams comprised 20 players a side. It was a beginning that neither nation could have predicted would still be producing drama over 150 years later.
