Getting around
The Piccadilly Line serves both Arsenal and Holloway Road stations, each a short walk from the ground. Arsenal station is closer to the main entrance and less congested before kick-off.
Black cabs and ride-hailing apps are readily available across North London. On match days, drop-off points are a few minutes' walk from the stadium as road closures apply around Highbury.
Several TfL bus routes stop within walking distance of the Emirates, including the 4, 19, 29, and 253. Useful if you are travelling from central London or Kings Cross.
Arsenal and Burnley are two of English football's founding forces, their rivalry stretching back to the 1890s when both clubs were finding their feet in the Football League. One was born in a Woolwich munitions factory, the other from a cricket club in the Lancashire mill town. Between them they hold three league titles apiece from the pre-war era alone. The fixture has survived world wars, relegation battles, and the seismic shift to the Premier League, and it remains a meeting of two clubs whose histories are woven into the fabric of the English game.

Burnley FC was established on 18 May 1882, evolving from Burnley Rovers cricket club. The club settled at Turf Moor in 1883, a ground they have never left, making it one of the longest continuously occupied football grounds in the world. They became founding members of the Football League in 1888.
Forged in a munitions factory, Arsenal began life as Dial Square FC before south-east London could even guess what north London was about to inherit.
Workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich formed Dial Square FC in October 1886, quickly renaming themselves Royal Arsenal. The club turned professional in 1891 and joined the Football League in 1893. Their south-east London origins feel a world away from the north London institution they would become.
Burnley opened 1920-21 with 30 league matches unbeaten, claiming the title; Arsenal, seven years settled in north London, were no strangers to the rivalry.

Under Herbert Chapman and then George Allison, Arsenal won five league titles and two FA Cups in the 1930s. Burnley won the First Division title in 1959-60, pipping Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day. It was a remarkable achievement for a club from a town with a population of around 80,000. Under Harry Potts, the Clarets played attractive, attacking football and reached the FA Cup final in 1962. This was the high-water mark of Burnley's post-war golden era.
Charlie George's winner gave Arsenal a Double; Burnley began a slide that would not bottom out until the Fourth Division in 1985.
Arsenal won the league and FA Cup Double in 1970-71, with Charlie George's iconic FA Cup final goal against Liverpool sealing the achievement. Burnley, by contrast, were sliding. They were relegated from the First Division in 1971 and would eventually drop as low as the Fourth Division by 1985. The fixture disappeared from the calendar for long stretches as the two clubs occupied different tiers of English football.

Arsène Wenger's Arsenal went the entire 2003-04 Premier League season unbeaten, earning the squad the nickname 'The Invincibles'. It was a feat not achieved since Preston North End in 1889. Burnley were in the First Division (now the Championship) at the time, so the two sides did not meet that season, but the achievement redefined what was possible in the modern game.

Arsenal moved to the 60,704-capacity Emirates Stadium in Ashburton Grove, Islington, leaving behind 93 years at Highbury. The new ground was a statement of ambition: a modern, purpose-built arena designed to generate the revenue needed to compete with Europe's wealthiest clubs. The old Highbury pitch is now a garden, the stands converted into apartments. It remains one of the most atmospheric grounds in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche led Burnley back to the Premier League in 2014, and the fixture with Arsenal was renewed at the Emirates. Burnley's approach under Dyche was pragmatic and physical, a stark contrast to Arsenal's possession-based style. The Clarets earned promotion again in 2016 and stayed in the top flight until 2022, making this a regular fixture once more. Their 2017-18 season was particularly impressive, finishing seventh and qualifying for the Europa League.

Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, have been genuine title contenders in consecutive seasons, finishing second in both 2022-23 and 2023-24. The Emirates provides a formidable home advantage, and this fixture offers a compelling contrast of styles: Arteta's fluid, high-pressing Arsenal against a Burnley side determined to prove they belong at the top table once more.
