1999

Two songwriters meet at a BMI workshop and hatch a plan involving puppets.

Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx met at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York. Both shared an interest in writing a musical that used puppets alongside human actors. They began developing songs and characters inspired by the experience of being a twentysomething in New York City, broke and bewildered. The concept was simple: what if Sesame Street grew up and got a hangover?

On 20 March 2003, Avenue Q premiered at the Vineyard Theatre, a 120-seat off-Broadway house. Directed by Jason Moore, the show featured puppets designed by Rick Lyon and a cast that included John Tartaglia, Stephanie D'Abruzzo, and Ann Harada. Reviews were rapturous. The New York Times called it "one of the funniest shows in a long time." The limited run sold out almost immediately, and producers began planning a transfer.

2003

The show transfers to Broadway's Golden Theatre.

On 31 July 2003, Avenue Q opened at the John Golden Theatre on Broadway. The intimate 805-seat house suited the show's scrappy charm. It was a calculated gamble: a small musical with puppets, no stars, and songs about internet pornography, going head-to-head with the big-budget spectacles of the Great White Way. The gamble paid off handsomely.

2004

Avenue Q stuns the theatre world by winning the Tony for Best Musical.

Puppets pipped Wicked to three Tonys in 2004; Broadway has never quite recovered from the shock.

At the 58th Tony Awards on 6 June 2004, Avenue Q beat Wicked, Caroline, or Change, and The Boy from Oz to win Best Musical. It also took home Best Book of a Musical for Jeff Whitty and Best Original Score for Lopez and Marx. The upset over Wicked remains one of the most talked-about results in Tony history. Avenue Q won three Tonys in total from six nominations.

2006

Avenue Q crosses the Atlantic to London's West End.

Puppets, profanity, and nearly three West End years; Avenue Q's Olivier nod proved irreverence travels beautifully.

On 1 June 2006, Avenue Q opened at the Noël Coward Theatre in London's West End. The production was well received by British audiences and critics, running until March 2009. It earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best New Musical. The show's irreverent humour translated well across the Atlantic, with London audiences particularly warming to the song "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist."

2009

Avenue Q moves off-Broadway to New World Stages.

Smaller stage, longer run; the off-Broadway move was the shrewdest decision in the show's life.

After 2,534 performances on Broadway, Avenue Q played its final show at the Golden Theatre on 13 September 2009. But this was no farewell. On 21 October 2009, the show reopened at New World Stages, a 499-seat off-Broadway venue. The smaller house suited the material perfectly, and the move allowed the production to run profitably for years to come. It was a shrewd piece of theatrical economics.

2011

Robert Lopez becomes the youngest EGOT winner, with Avenue Q as the foundation.

Avenue Q gave Robert Lopez his first Tony, and by 2014 he had completed the EGOT with wins across Emmy, Grammy and Oscar categories.

Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez won a Daytime Emmy in 2008 for his work on Wonder Pets!, adding to his Tony for Avenue Q. He would go on to win an Oscar and a Grammy for "Let It Go" from Frozen in 2014, completing the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). Avenue Q was the show that launched one of the most decorated careers in modern musical theatre. Lopez also co-created The Book of Mormon, which opened in 2011.

2019

Avenue Q takes its final bow off-Broadway after a 16-year New York run.

Over 6,500 performances across 16 years; Avenue Q outlasted almost every musical New York had seen.

On 28 April 2019, Avenue Q played its final performance at New World Stages, closing after a combined Broadway and off-Broadway run of over 6,500 performances across 16 years. It had become one of the longest-running musicals in New York history. The show's themes, once edgy, had become almost prophetic: the anxieties of young adulthood it satirised in 2003 had only deepened in the intervening years.

2026

Avenue Q returns to London's West End.

Two decades on, Avenue Q's puppets and millennial malaise are back where they belong.

Avenue Q is set to return to London's West End in 2026, marking the show's first major London revival since the original production closed in 2009. The announcement confirms the show's enduring appeal: two decades on, its blend of puppet comedy and millennial anxiety still resonates. For a generation who grew up with the original, and a new one discovering it fresh, the return promises to be a proper occasion.
