Beyoncé Knowles, then just 16, signed with Columbia Records as part of Destiny's Child. The group's self-titled debut album arrived in 1998, but it was their second record, The Writing's on the Wall (1999), that turned them into a global phenomenon. 'Bills, Bills, Bills' and 'Say My Name' established Beyoncé's voice as something altogether different: precise, powerful, and impossible to ignore.
