Thirty-five minutes separated Elvis from a life as a twin; Jesse Garon never drew breath.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on 8 January 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. His identical twin brother, Jesse Garon, was delivered stillborn 35 minutes before him. The family was poor. Vernon Presley worked odd jobs; Gladys doted on her surviving son. Elvis grew up singing in the Assembly of God church and absorbing the gospel, country and blues music that drifted through the American South.

In the summer of 1953, a teenage Elvis cut his first acetate at Memphis Recording Service. Within a year, "That's All Right" had given rock and roll its voice.

In the summer of 1953, the 18-year-old Elvis walked into Memphis Recording Service, the commercial arm of Sam Phillips's Sun Records, and cut a two-sided acetate disc. The songs were "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin". Phillips's assistant Marion Keisker noted his name. By July 1954, Phillips paired Elvis with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, and their recording of "That's All Right" became a regional sensation. Rock and roll had found its voice.

Three Ed Sullivan appearances drew 60 million viewers; by the third, only his top half made the cut.

Colonel Tom Parker secured Elvis a contract with RCA Victor in late 1955, and by January 1956 "Heartbreak Hotel" was climbing the charts. His three appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show between September 1956 and January 1957 drew an estimated 60 million viewers. The third appearance famously showed him only from the waist up. That same year, his debut album topped the Billboard chart, and he starred in his first film, Love Me Tender. Elvis was no longer a musician. He was a phenomenon.

Black leather, old bandmates, zero polish; the 1968 NBC special proved Elvis had lost nothing.

After years spent making formulaic Hollywood films, Elvis returned to live performance with the NBC television special Elvis, broadcast on 3 December 1968. Dressed in black leather, seated with his original bandmates, he was raw, magnetic and visibly hungry. The "sit-down" segments are still regarded as some of the finest live music ever broadcast. The special was a critical and commercial triumph, and it set the stage for the next chapter of his career.

Fifty-seven sold-out shows, 600 more to follow; Las Vegas did not host Elvis so much as absorb him.

On 31 July 1969, Elvis opened at the International Hotel in Las Vegas for a four-week engagement. It was his first live concert appearance in over seven years. He performed 57 shows to packed houses, breaking the hotel's attendance records. The white jumpsuits, the TCB band, the gospel backing singers: the Vegas-era Elvis was born. He would perform over 600 shows in Las Vegas between 1969 and 1976, becoming as synonymous with the city as the neon itself.

One concert, one satellite signal, one billion pairs of eyes: Elvis made the whole world his audience.

On 14 January 1973, Elvis performed a concert at the Honolulu International Center that was broadcast live via satellite to audiences across Asia, Europe and Oceania. Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite was the first entertainment special to be globally broadcast in this way, and it reached an estimated audience of over 1 billion people in 40 countries. The NBC broadcast in the United States on 4 April 1973 drew 51% of the television audience. It remains one of the most-watched broadcasts in television history.

Over 600,000 visitors a year still make the pilgrimage to Graceland; death, it turns out, was no obstacle to Elvis selling out.

Elvis Presley died on 16 August 1977 at Graceland, aged 42. In the decades since, his cultural footprint has only expanded. Graceland became a National Historic Landmark and draws over 600,000 visitors a year. His estate, managed by Elvis Presley Enterprises, has generated billions. Cirque du Soleil's Viva Elvis ran in Las Vegas from 2010 to 2012. Baz Luhrmann's 2022 biopic Elvis, starring Austin Butler, grossed over $280 million worldwide and introduced a new generation to the story.

Digital ABBAtars sold out a purpose-built London arena; nostalgia, it turns out, is recession-proof.

In May 2022, ABBA Voyage opened at a purpose-built arena in east London, using motion-capture "ABBAtars" to recreate the band in digital form. The show proved there was a massive appetite for technology-driven concert experiences featuring artists who could no longer perform in person. It became one of London's hottest tickets and ran to packed houses. The success of Voyage helped pave the way for Elvis Evolution, demonstrating that audiences would embrace a new form of live entertainment built on nostalgia, spectacle and genuine emotional connection.

Created by British production company Layered Reality, Elvis Evolution premiered at ExCeL London in 2025. The immersive theatrical experience draws on hundreds of hours of video footage and photography from Presley's personal archive at Graceland, combining them with live performers, feature-quality sets and projection technology to walk audiences through the full arc of Elvis's life. It is not a hologram show, not a tribute act, not a museum. It is something genuinely new: a theatrical experience that places you inside the story of the most famous entertainer who ever lived.
