Singapore's motorsport history predates its F1 era by decades. The first Singapore Grand Prix was held in 1966 as a Formula Libre meeting on the Thomson Road circuit, a fast and unforgiving track that wound through the island's northern suburbs. Racing continued there through the 1970s, drawing regional talent and establishing Singapore as a serious venue for single-seater competition in Southeast Asia.
