Lansdowne Road DART station is right beside the Aviva Stadium. Services run regularly from Dublin city centre and the coastal suburbs.
Taxis and ride-hailing are widely available in Dublin. The stadium is in the Ballsbridge area, around 20 minutes' walk from the city centre.
The Aviva Stadium is walkable from most central Dublin hotels. It is about a 25-minute stroll from Grafton Street through the pleasant Georgian streets of Dublin 4.

On 28 January 1882, Ireland hosted Wales at Lansdowne Road in Dublin for the very first time. Wales won by two goals and two tries to nil in a match played under rules still being formalised. The fixture predates the Home Nations Championship by a year, making it one of the founding rivalries of international rugby union.
Structure turned a casual meeting into a contest that finally had consequences.
The inaugural Home Nations Championship in 1883 brought structure to what had been ad hoc fixtures between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Ireland and Wales now met annually, alternating between Dublin and various Welsh venues. The championship gave the rivalry context and consequence; results mattered beyond the single match.
Six titles in eleven years; Wales did not merely compete in this era, they owned it.
Between 1900 and 1911, Wales enjoyed a golden age in which they won six Home Nations titles outright. During this period, Welsh sides were formidable opponents for Ireland in Dublin, winning the majority of their encounters. The 1909 Grand Slam, Wales's first, underlined their status as the dominant force in northern hemisphere rugby.
Sixty-one years would pass before Ireland tasted Grand Slam glory again; Ravenhill, 1948, is where it all began.
Ireland's 1948 Five Nations campaign remains one of the great achievements in the sport's history. Karl Mullen's side won all four matches, including a 6-3 victory over Wales at Ravenhill in Belfast, to secure Ireland's first and, for 61 years, only Grand Slam. The triumph cemented the Ireland v Wales fixture as one capable of deciding championships.

The 1970s belonged to Wales. With Gareth Edwards, Barry John, JPR Williams, and Phil Bennett pulling the strings, Wales won four Grand Slams and six Five Nations titles between 1969 and 1979. Trips to Lansdowne Road were rarely comfortable for Ireland during this era. The Welsh sides of this period are still regarded as among the finest to have played the game.

After three years of construction, the Aviva Stadium opened in May 2010 on the exact footprint of the old Lansdowne Road ground. The 51,700-capacity venue, designed by Populous and Scott Tallon Walker, replaced a ground that had hosted rugby since 1878. Ireland's first Six Nations match at the new stadium came in February 2010 against Italy, and the ground quickly established itself as one of European rugby's most atmospheric venues.

Joe Schmidt's Ireland were imperious in 2018, winning the Grand Slam for only the third time in the nation's history. The 37-27 victory over Wales at the Aviva Stadium in Round 3 was a pivotal moment in the campaign. Ireland scored five tries in a breathless encounter, with Jacob Stockdale's finishing proving decisive. It was a statement performance that set up the Grand Slam decider against England at Twickenham.
