The Isle of Wight Festival began as a scrappy counterculture gathering in 1968 and, within two years, became the largest music event the world had ever seen. After a 32-year hiatus prompted by an Act of Parliament, it returned in 2002 and has since established itself as one of Britain's most beloved summer festivals. Its story is one of reinvention: from the fields that hosted Hendrix and Dylan to the modern Seaclose Park site that draws headliners and 50,000-plus crowds each June.
It was the last great event. Six hundred thousand people on a small island off the south coast of England. It was the culmination of the sixties dream.
Three brothers, a farm near Godshill, and 10,000 souls; an island discovered its purpose in a single afternoon.
Brothers Ray, Ron, and Bill Foulk organised the first Isle of Wight Festival of Music on 31 August 1968 at Ford Farm, near Godshill. Around 10,000 people attended, with Jefferson Airplane, T. Rex, and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown among the acts. It was modest by later standards, but the island had found its calling.
Dylan's return to the stage drew an estimated 150,000 people to Woodside Bay, overwhelming the island's ferries and making international headlines overnight.
The Foulk brothers pulled off a coup: Bob Dylan's first live appearance since his 1966 motorcycle accident. Held at Woodside Bay near Wootton on 29 to 31 August, the 1969 festival drew an estimated 150,000 people. Dylan was joined by The Who, The Band, and The Moody Blues. The island's ferries were overwhelmed. The festival had become international news overnight.

Getting around
Public transport runs to the venue on the day. Your event manager sends the route and nearest station with the booking confirmation.
Black cabs and ride-share apps are available across the local area. Drop-offs on the day depend on road closures; the booking confirmation flags the nearest set-down point.
Chauffeured cars or coaches for larger parties can be arranged through your event manager. Pricing is case-by-case and varies with party size.
I wanted to bring it back because the Isle of Wight Festival is part of British music history. It deserved a second life.
Between 600,000 and 700,000 people witnessed Hendrix perform just 18 days before his death.
The 1970 festival, held from 26 to 30 August at Afton Down on the island's western tip, became the largest gathering of its kind. Estimates range from 600,000 to 700,000 attendees, surpassing Woodstock. Jimi Hendrix gave one of his final performances, just 18 days before his death. The Doors, The Who, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, and Leonard Cohen also played. The sheer scale caused chaos. Fences were torn down, the organisers lost money, and local residents were furious. It was magnificent and unsustainable in equal measure.
Parliament did not merely close the gates; it silenced the fields for thirty years.
In direct response to the 1970 festival, the Isle of Wight County Council Act 1971 was passed by Parliament. It effectively prohibited gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special licence. The festival was dead, legislated out of existence. For over three decades, the fields fell silent.
Thirty-two years after the 1971 Act, 8,000 people gathered at Seaclose Park and proved the spirit was unmistakable.
The restrictive 1971 Act was finally repealed, and the Isle of Wight Festival was revived by promoter John Giddings. Held at Seaclose Park in Newport, the 2002 edition featured Robert Plant, The Charlatans, and Ash. Around 8,000 people attended. It was a fraction of the 1970 crowd, but the spirit was unmistakable.
Sixty thousand on an island; when the Stones play, even the ferries stay up late.
By 2007, the revived festival had grown into a major fixture on the British summer calendar. The Rolling Stones headlined to a crowd of around 60,000, cementing the festival's status as a destination for the biggest names in music. Snow Patrol and Muse also topped the bill that year. The island's infrastructure had adapted; the ferries ran late, the pubs stayed open, and Newport embraced its annual transformation.
The Boss played past curfew; the crowd stayed, and the judges took note.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band headlined the Saturday night in 2012, delivering a set that ran well past the 11pm curfew. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam also headlined across the weekend. The festival won the UK Festival Award for Best Major Festival that year, recognition of how far it had come since its modest 2002 return.
By 2016, the Isle of Wight had ticked off virtually every great name in rock; Queen and Faithless were the final flourish.
Queen + Adam Lambert headlined the 2016 festival, alongside The Who and Faithless. By this point, the Isle of Wight Festival had hosted virtually every major act in British and American rock. The festival had also expanded well beyond its main stage, with comedy tents, a literary stage, and a dedicated kids' area reflecting its evolution into a full family weekend.
A festival delayed, reduced, and rescheduled to September still felt like the loudest proof that live music had survived.
After the 2020 cancellation due to COVID-19, the 2021 Isle of Wight Festival was held in September rather than its usual June slot, serving as one of the UK government's Experiences Research Programme pilot occasions. Liam Gallagher, David Guetta, and Snow Patrol headlined. Capacity was reduced, but the festival's return felt significant. Live music was back.
The Solent itself is part of the ticket; crossing it has always been the first act of the festival.
The 2024 festival featured Green Day, Pet Shop Boys, and The Prodigy as headliners, drawing tens of thousands to Seaclose Park. Now well into its third decade since revival, the Isle of Wight Festival continues to balance nostalgia with relevance, booking acts that span generations. The ferry crossing remains part of the ritual; the Solent is the moat that separates the mainland from the weekend.
