American entrepreneur George Mortimer Pullman brought his concept of luxury rail travel to Britain, introducing the first Pullman parlour car on the Midland Railway. The idea was simple but radical: instead of merely transporting passengers, the railway could offer them an experience. Plush seating, attentive service, and meals served at your seat. British travellers took to it immediately.
