The railway's radical idea: stop moving passengers and start serving them.

American entrepreneur George Mortimer Pullman brought his concept of luxury rail travel to Britain, introducing the first Pullman parlour car on the Midland Railway. The idea was simple but radical: instead of merely transporting passengers, the railway could offer them an experience. Plush seating, attentive service, and meals served at your seat. British travellers took to it immediately.

By the mid-1920s, the Pullman Car Company was operating some of the most celebrated carriages in British railway history. Cars like Ibis, Perseus, and Zena, many of which still run on the British Pullman today, were built during this period with Art Deco marquetry, brass fittings, and hand-stitched upholstery. Each carriage had its own character. The Brighton Belle, the Golden Arrow to Dover, and the Queen of Scots all became bywords for civilised travel.

Great carriages left to rust in sidings; nationalisation did not merely absorb Pullman, it quietly abandoned it.

The Pullman Car Company was absorbed into British Railways following nationalisation. Pullman services continued for a time, but the writing was on the wall. The Brighton Belle made its final run in 1972, and the great Pullman carriages were dispersed, many left to rot in sidings and scrapyards. It seemed the era of Pullman luxury had ended for good.

Two carriages bought at auction in Monte Carlo; a continent-wide obsession followed.

American businessman James Sherwood attended a Sotheby's auction in Monte Carlo and purchased two original Wagon-Lits sleeping cars from the Orient Express. This sparked an obsession. Over the following years, Sherwood tracked down and acquired dozens of derelict Pullman and Wagon-Lits carriages across Europe, spending millions on their painstaking restoration. His vision was to revive the golden age of luxury rail travel.

A rake of restored 1920s and 1930s Pullman carriages carried the Orient-Express dream before it even reached the Channel.

Sherwood's Venice Simplon-Orient-Express made its inaugural journey from London to Venice on 25 May 1982. The British leg of the journey, from London Victoria to Folkestone, used a rake of beautifully restored 1920s and 1930s Pullman carriages. This British Pullman train soon began operating its own standalone day trips and dining excursions through the Kent and Surrey countryside, offering the full Pullman experience without crossing the Channel.

A Michelin star at Tamarind put Kochhar among the first Indian chefs to earn the honour; classical Indian technique, the finest British ingredients.

Atul Kochhar, born in Jamshedpur, India, earned a Michelin star at Tamarind in Mayfair, making him one of the first Indian chefs to receive the honour. His approach was distinctive: classical Indian technique and spicing applied to the finest British seasonal ingredients. He went on to open Benares in Mayfair in 2003, which earned its own Michelin star in 2007 and held it for over a decade.

The name above the door changed; the white gloves, the carriages, and Platform 2 at Victoria did not.

The parent company rebranded from Orient-Express Hotels to Belmond, and the British Pullman became the Belmond British Pullman. The rebrand reflected the company's broader portfolio of luxury hotels, trains, and river cruises worldwide. The train itself remained unchanged: the same lovingly maintained carriages, the same departure from Platform 2 at Victoria, the same white-gloved stewards.

The world's largest luxury group paid $3.2 billion to bring the British Pullman into the same stable as Dior and Dom Pérignon.

French luxury conglomerate LVMH, parent of Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy, completed its acquisition of Belmond. The deal placed the British Pullman within the world's largest luxury group, alongside Dior, Tiffany, and Dom Pérignon. Investment in the carriages and guest experience accelerated, with new collaborations bringing world-class chefs and artists on board.

Kochhar's refined Indian cooking, rooted in British produce, finds its most theatrical dining room yet: a moving train.

Belmond expanded its programme of guest chef partnerships on the British Pullman, inviting acclaimed names to design bespoke menus served in the restored carriages. Atul Kochhar's collaboration brings his signature style, refined Indian flavours built on impeccable British produce, to one of the most atmospheric dining rooms in the country. The train departs Victoria and winds through the countryside while guests work through a multi-course menu that would hold its own in any Mayfair restaurant, only here the view changes with every course.
