Thames Ironworks FC was reborn as West Ham United in 1900, six years after City had already claimed their own name from Ardwick AFC.
Thames Ironworks FC, founded in 1895 by shipyard owner Arnold Hills, is reformed and renamed West Ham United on 5 July 1900. Manchester City, who had adopted their own name from Ardwick AFC in 1894, now have a future rival on the books. The two clubs would not meet competitively for some years, with West Ham plying their trade in the Southern League while City established themselves in the Football League's top division.
