Micky Flanagan's rise from the streets of Whitechapel to the biggest arenas in Britain is one of the great late-blooming stories in comedy. A fish porter, painter and decorator, and factory floor worker before he ever picked up a microphone, Flanagan didn't start performing stand-up until his mid-thirties. Within fifteen years he was selling out the O2 Arena and breaking box office records that most comedians never get close to.

Fish porter to sell-out comedian; the East End gave Micky Flanagan everything he needed.

Michael John Flanagan was born on 7 October 1962 in Whitechapel, in London's East End. He grew up on the Boundary Estate and left school with few qualifications, working variously as a fish porter at Billingsgate Market, a painter and decorator, and in a factory. The East End shaped everything about his comedy: the rhythms, the observations, the refusal to take anything too seriously.

Thirty-five years old before he touched a microphone; the material was already written.

At the age of 35, Flanagan began performing stand-up comedy on the London open mic circuit. Most comedians start in their twenties. Flanagan had spent those years living the life he would later mine for material. He studied at the City Literary Institute and honed his craft in the back rooms of pubs, where the audience was close enough to smell your fear.
