The first Royal Command Performance takes place at the Palace Theatre.

Excluded for being too risqué, Marie Lloyd staged her own rival show and told the press she did not need a royal audience to fill a theatre.
On 1 July 1912, King George V and Queen Mary attended the first Royal Command Performance at the Palace Theatre in London's West End. The show was organised to raise funds for the Variety Artistes' Benevolent Fund, a charity supporting performers who had fallen on hard times. The bill featured music hall stars of the Edwardian era, and the evening raised what was then a considerable sum for the fund. One notable absence from the first show was Marie Lloyd, reportedly excluded because her act was considered too risqué for royal ears. She responded by performing her own rival show across town, reportedly telling the press she did not need a royal audience to fill a theatre.
