Racing comes to Cleeve Hill, and Cheltenham finds its calling.

Organised racing on Cotswold turf since 1815; the town was always destined for this.
The first recorded flat race meeting at Cheltenham took place on Nottingham Hill, near the present site at Prestbury Park. Racing had been a feature of the area since at least the early 1800s, but 1815 marks the earliest documented organised meeting. The Cotswolds terrain, with its natural undulations and firm turf, proved ideal for the sport that would eventually define the town.
