Dr Laidlaw Purves founds Royal St George's on the Kent coast.

A physician atop a church tower; a glance at some dunes; the birth of England's first great links course.
Scottish physician Dr Laidlaw Purves spotted the dunes near Sandwich from a church tower and recognised their potential for links golf. He founded Royal St George's Golf Club in 1887, laying out a course across the undulating terrain between the town and the sea. It was the first major links course to be established in southern England.
