Tyson Fury

Born at one pound, he was never supposed to exist; turning professional was almost the easy part.

Tyson Luke Fury, named after Mike Tyson by his father John, made his professional debut on 6 December 2008 in Nottingham, stopping Bela Gyongyosi in the first round. Born three months premature and weighing just one pound, Fury's survival was itself improbable. His early career was built on an unorthodox style that baffled opponents: a giant who moved like a man half his size.

At 22 years old, Fury outpointed Chisora to seize two titles and announce himself as British boxing's most exciting heavyweight prospect.

On 23 July 2011, Fury defeated Dereck Chisora on points at Wembley Arena to win the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. It was a statement performance against a dangerous opponent. At just 22, Fury had announced himself as the most promising British heavyweight in a generation, with a record that was building momentum fight by fight.

Chisora's corner threw in the towel in round ten; Klitschko was next.

Fury won the European heavyweight title with a dominant points victory over Dereck Chisora in their November 2014 rematch, forcing Chisora's corner to retire him after the tenth round. The win confirmed Fury as the mandatory challenger for Wladimir Klitschko's world titles. The stage was set for the biggest fight in British heavyweight boxing for a decade.

Five heavyweight titles changed hands that night; Klitschko never did find an answer to Fury's footwork.

On 28 November 2015, Fury travelled to Düsseldorf as a heavy underdog and outboxed Wladimir Klitschko over twelve rounds to win the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring heavyweight titles by unanimous decision. It was the upset of the decade. Klitschko, who had dominated the division for over a decade, simply could not solve Fury's movement, feints and sheer unpredictability. Fury famously sang "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" in the ring afterwards.

For two years, the heavyweight champion of the world simply vanished; his candour about mental health proved more consequential than any belt he ever held.

What followed the Klitschko victory was not a reign of dominance but a very public unravelling. Fury vacated his titles in October 2016, revealing he had been battling severe depression, anxiety and substance abuse. His boxing licence was suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control. For two years, the heavyweight champion of the world disappeared from the sport entirely. Fury later spoke openly about contemplating suicide, and his honesty about mental health became as significant as any fight he ever had.

Knocked flat in the twelfth, Fury still found his feet; the Staples Center witnessed a recovery that redefined what a heavyweight could survive.

Having ballooned to nearly 28 stone during his time away, Fury returned to the ring in June 2018 with a points win over Sefer Seferi. The real statement came on 1 December 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where Fury challenged WBC champion Deontay Wilder. Fury outboxed Wilder for most of the fight but was dropped heavily in the twelfth round. He rose from the canvas in what many consider the most dramatic recovery in modern heavyweight history. The fight was scored a controversial split draw.

Wilder never saw round eight; Fury's corner switch to SugarHill Steward had changed everything.

On 22 February 2020 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Fury produced one of the great heavyweight performances of the modern era. He battered Wilder from the opening bell, dropping him twice before Wilder's corner threw in the towel in the seventh round. It was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Fury adopted a more front-foot style under new trainer SugarHill Steward, and the result was devastating. The Gypsy King was WBC heavyweight champion of the world.

94,000 at Wembley; Britain's biggest boxing crowd in nearly thirty years, ended by a single uppercut in round six.

After stopping Wilder again in a brutal October 2021 trilogy fight in Las Vegas, Fury returned to British soil for the first time in years. On 23 April 2022, a crowd of 94,000 packed Wembley Stadium to watch Fury defend his WBC title against Dillian Whyte. Fury ended it with a single devastating uppercut in the sixth round. It was the biggest boxing crowd in Britain since Lennox Lewis fought Frank Bruno at Cardiff Arms Park in 1993. Fury announced his retirement afterwards, though few believed it would stick.

Twenty-five years on from Lewis and Holyfield, the undisputed dream slipped away on a split decision.

On 18 May 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Fury faced Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship. It was the first undisputed heavyweight title fight since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in 1999. Fury was dropped in the ninth round and lost by split decision in a closely contested fight. The December 2024 rematch in Riyadh saw Usyk win again, this time by unanimous decision. At 36, Fury's quest for undisputed status had ended, but his place in heavyweight history was already secure.
