The European Nations' Cup kicks off in France.

Four teams, one final, zero England. The greatest club in European football began without us.
The first European Nations' Cup, the brainchild of French Football Federation secretary Henri Delaunay, was held in France with just four teams in the final tournament. The Soviet Union beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in the final in Paris. England did not enter, and Denmark were eliminated in the qualifying rounds. The tournament was modest in scale, but it planted the seed for what would become one of football's great competitions.
