Samuel Ryder puts up the gold. The first official Ryder Cup is played.

Great Britain turned up, lost by seven points, and somehow made it a tradition.
English seed merchant Samuel Ryder commissioned a gold trophy and the first official Ryder Cup was held at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. A Great Britain team captained by Ted Ray lost 9½–2½ to the Americans, led by Walter Hagen. The format was match play from the start, and the meeting was scheduled to alternate between British and American courses every two years.
