The sixth nation to grace Test cricket, India made Lord's their stage in the summer of 1932.
On 25 June 1932, India became the sixth nation to play Test cricket when they faced England at Lord's. Led by C. K. Nayudu, India were bowled out for 189 and 187, losing by 158 runs. It was a single-Test tour, but it marked the beginning of a cricketing relationship that would span nearly a century.
A captain who had once worn England's whites now led India against them; cricket's ironies rarely cut so cleanly.
India toured England for a three-Test series in 1946, their first multi-match series on English soil. England won 1-0, with two draws. The Nawab of Pataudi Sr, who had played for England in the 1930s, was now captaining India. Vijay Merchant topped the tour batting averages, announcing India as a side with genuine talent if not yet the depth to compete over a full series.

Under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar, India achieved what had seemed impossible: a series victory in England. They won the three-match series 1-0, with the decisive victory coming at The Oval. Bhagwat Chandrasekhar took 6 for 38 in England's second innings to bowl them out for just 101. It was a watershed moment for Indian cricket, proving they could win away from home against the game's oldest nation.
Vengsarkar scored a Lord's century in three separate tours; small wonder they called him 'Lord of Lord's'.
Fifteen years after their first series win in England, India did it again. Kapil Dev's side won the three-match series 2-0, with Dilip Vengsarkar scoring centuries at Lord's in consecutive Tests (1979, 1982, and 1986), earning him the nickname 'Lord of Lord's'. It was a tour that confirmed India's growing stature in world cricket, three years after their 1983 World Cup triumph.
Tendulkar's 193 at Headingley remains the gold standard for batting mastery on English soil.
The 2002 series was drawn 1-1 and produced some of the finest cricket the rivalry has seen. At Headingley, England were bowled out for 273 chasing 315, with India winning by 170 runs. At The Oval, England levelled the series. Sachin Tendulkar scored 193 at Headingley, an innings widely regarded as one of the greatest played in England. The Pataudi Trophy was established in 2007, named after the Nawab of Pataudi family, whose members had represented both England and India at Test level. Having averaged just 13.40 in England in 2014, Kohli returned and scored 593 runs at an average of 59.30, silencing those who questioned his ability in seaming conditions. The 2021 series was unlike any other. After four Tests, India led 2-1, but the fifth Test at Old Trafford was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp. It was eventually rescheduled and played at Edgbaston in July 2022, where England chased down 378 to win by seven wickets under their new 'Bazball' approach. The series was drawn 2-2. Joe Root scored 737 runs across the series, while Jasprit Bumrah took 23 wickets.
