From Thursday 7th to Wednesday 13th October 2027, the Rovos Rail South Africa Safari Experience spans six nights of rail travel and game viewing. The train is an exercise in preservation, maintaining an Edwardian aesthetic with wood-panelled carriages and period fittings. It is not a modern commuter service; there are no radios or television sets on board, and the use of mobile phones or laptops is restricted to the privacy of your cabin to maintain the atmosphere. The six-night duration allows the train to cover significant ground while serving as your accommodation. You avoid the friction of transferring between lodges, as your room travels with you. The observation car at the rear provides an open-air vantage point for the passing South African landscape. Dinner is a formal occasion, requiring a jacket and tie, which sets a specific tone for the evenings. The focus here is on a slower pace of travel, punctuated by the safari elements, rather than rushing to tick off sightings.

How are travel and transfers handled?

The package includes economy class flights from London to Johannesburg, an internal flight to Cape Town, and a final return flight to London. All group transfers between airports, hotels, and the train station are pre-arranged and included in the itinerary. Once the group arrives back at a London airport, guests are responsible for making their own onward travel arrangements to their final destination.

What is the dress code onboard Rovos Rail?

During the day, the dress code is smart casual, and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended as the train is in motion. Evenings are a formal affair; gentlemen must wear a collar and tie, while ladies are encouraged to wear cocktail or evening dresses. You may also encounter themed nights, such as "Africa" or the "1920s," where you can dress to match the theme or remain in standard formal wear.

What should I pack for excursions?

For off-train trips, you should bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a hat. Because game drives use open vehicles, it is important to pack layers to stay comfortable during cool mornings and warm daytime temperatures.

What wildlife experiences are included?

The itinerary features a private visit to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre to learn about conservation and rehabilitation. Additionally, you will enjoy a full-day game drive in Kruger National Park led by expert rangers to search for the Big Five.
