Our best tips

Weather

July in Hungary averages 25–30°C with warm evenings, perfect for exploring Budapest. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a light layer for after dark.

Don't forget

Given the time of year, expect the Hungarian Grand Prix to be a scorcher, with track temperatures soaring to nearly 60 degrees during the 2022 practice sessions. Be sure to pack your sunscreen, hat, and shades!

Dress code

While there isn't a strict dress code for the Hungarian Grand Prix, it's worth noting that this Formula 1 event happens in July, right in the midst of summer. So, we suggest choosing attire that keeps you cool and comfortable under the sun.

Getting around

Getting around the Hungaroring from Budapest

You're based in Budapest, not at the track

The flights land in Budapest and the hotel sits in the city, so the Hungaroring is a run north-east into Mogyoród on race day.

District VII owns the free evening

The old Jewish Quarter holds the ruin bars and the densest run of good kitchens; District V is the polished, quieter alternative.

Sunday's exodus is the trap

One feeder road serves the circuit, so the whole crowd jams it at once; go straight after the flag or wait it out.

Bolt is what locals open first

Uber returned in 2024 and both run metered licensed drivers, but Bolt holds the deeper supply after dark.

The history of Hungarian Grand Prix race weekend

The history of Hungarian Grand Prix

The Hungarian Grand Prix holds a singular place in Formula 1 history: it was the first championship race held behind the Iron Curtain, a Cold War breakthrough that seemed improbable until the cars actually lined up on the grid in August 1986. The Hungaroring, carved from a valley outside Budapest in just eight months, has hosted every edition since. Its tight, twisting layout rewards patience and racecraft over raw speed, producing some of the sport's most memorable battles and unlikely victories.

I think Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the track is one of my favourites. I've had so many great memories there.

The Hungaroring is like a big go-kart track. You never stop turning. It's very physical, very hot, and the car never settles.

A hundred thousand spectators watched Nuvolari humble the Mercedes and Auto Union giants on a Budapest park circuit in 1936.

The original Hungarian Grand Prix was held on 21 June 1936 on a temporary circuit in Népliget Park, Budapest. Tazio Nuvolari won the race driving an Alfa Romeo, beating a field that included the dominant Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union teams. An estimated 100,000 spectators turned out, making it one of the best-attended pre-war Grands Prix in Europe.

A circuit conjured from bare earth in eight months; communism's first grand prix crowd numbered over 200,000.

Bernie Ecclestone brokered a deal to bring Formula 1 to communist Hungary, and the Hungaroring was built from scratch in just eight months. Ground was broken on 1 October 1985, and the circuit opened on 24 March 1986. Nelson Piquet won the inaugural race on 10 August 1986, with over 200,000 fans packing the natural amphitheatre. It was the first World Championship Grand Prix held in a country behind the Iron Curtain.

Nigel Mansell pulls off one of F1's greatest overtakes.

Starting twelfth, Mansell passed Senna at a circuit where overtaking was supposed to be impossible.

Nigel Mansell, starting from 12th on the grid, carved through the field to challenge Ayrton Senna for the lead. On a circuit widely considered impossible for overtaking, Mansell feinted left then dived right to pass Senna into Turn 1. The move remains one of the most celebrated overtakes in the sport's history. Mansell went on to win the race, proving the Hungaroring could deliver drama despite its narrow, technical layout.

Mansell sealed the title not from pole position, but by muscling past Senna in the closing laps of a sweltering afternoon duel.

Mansell arrived at the Hungaroring needing just one more point to clinch the 1992 World Championship. Senna, in an inferior McLaren, fought tooth and nail to keep the Williams at bay. Mansell eventually passed Senna with just a handful of laps remaining, securing second place and the title. The battle between two of the sport's fiercest competitors, in sweltering conditions, cemented the Hungarian Grand Prix's reputation for producing gripping racing.

The Hungaroring undergoes a major redesign to improve racing.

A circuit once condemned for sterile racing finally got the surgery it needed in 2003; wider corners, a fresh chicane, and 4.381 km of renewed purpose.

After years of criticism that the circuit was too processional, the Hungaroring was substantially modified for the 2003 season. The redesign widened several corners, added a new chicane section, and extended the track to 4.381 kilometres. The changes created additional overtaking opportunities and brought the circuit up to modern safety standards, securing its long-term future on the F1 calendar.

Jenson Button takes his maiden F1 victory in a rain-soaked classic.

113 races of waiting, ended in the rain by a driver who simply refused to crack.

After 113 races without a win, Jenson Button finally stood on the top step of the podium at the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. A chaotic wet race played into the hands of the Honda driver, who kept his composure while others faltered. The victory ended the longest winless streak for any driver who eventually won a race, and Button celebrated with visible emotion. The Hungaroring had delivered another of its trademark surprise results.

Lewis Hamilton begins his record-breaking love affair with Budapest.

Eight wins at a single circuit; Hamilton did not just conquer Budapest, he made it his own.

Lewis Hamilton claimed his first Hungarian Grand Prix victory in 2009, beginning a remarkable run at the circuit. He would go on to win a record eight times in Budapest, more than any other driver at any single venue in the modern era. The Hungaroring's technical demands, which reward smooth driving and tyre management, have consistently suited Hamilton's style. His dominance here has become one of the defining statistical achievements of his career.

A first-lap pile-up and Esteban Ocon's shock victory rewrite the script.

Ocon inherited a lead the frontrunners had gifted him and kept his nerve; Vettel could only watch a maiden win slip away.

The 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix descended into chaos from the very first corner. Valtteri Bottas braked too late into Turn 1 on a damp track, triggering a multi-car collision that eliminated several frontrunners. The race restarted with Lewis Hamilton alone on the grid after everyone else pitted for dry tyres. Esteban Ocon, driving for Alpine, inherited the lead and held off Sebastian Vettel to claim his maiden Grand Prix victory. It was the Hungaroring at its unpredictable best.

The Hungaroring celebrates 40 years and secures its future on the calendar.

Forty years on, Budapest's contract runs to 2032; the hillsides were never going anywhere.

The 2025 season marks the 40th anniversary of the Hungaroring's construction and its continued presence as one of Formula 1's most enduring venues. The circuit's contract has been extended to 2032, reflecting both the race's commercial success and the passionate Hungarian fanbase that fills the hillsides each August. With 41 Grands Prix held and counting, Budapest has earned its place as one of the calendar's most cherished fixtures.
