Three hundred years on, every day still opens with the monarch's procession down the Straight Mile at 2pm, and the racing card still pulls 350,000 over the five days. Queen Anne founds the course
The London Gazette carried news of the fixture on 12 July 1711; Doctor, owned by the Duke of St Albans, took the opening £50 plate.

The first Gold Cup
Now the meeting's headline race, run over two and a half miles on the Thursday of the week.
The Gold Cup was first contested on the third day of the meeting, the slot now known as Ladies Day. Its current distance is 2 miles 3 furlongs 210 yards, roughly 4,014 metres, making it the longest of the meeting's major races.

The Royal Enclosure dress code takes shape
Beau Brummel's influence on the Prince Regent gives the enclosure its rules: morning dress, top hat, and a hat with a four-inch base.
Brummel, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats, white cravats and pantaloons. The current rules still echo his template: men in grey, navy or black morning dress with top hats, women in formal daywear with a solid-base hat.

George IV starts the Royal Procession
Royal Landaus down the Straight Mile at 2pm. The pattern still holds every day of the meeting.
George IV established the procession in 1825, and the monarch and royal family have travelled down the Straight Mile in royal Landaus each day of the meeting ever since. The 2pm timing has held for two centuries.

Lester Piggott's eleven Gold Cups

Piggott wins the Gold Cup eleven times across twenty-five years. No jockey has come close since.
Piggott took his first Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 1957 and his eleventh in 1982. Across those twenty-five years he posted more Gold Cup wins than any other jockey in the race's history, a record still standing more than forty years on.

Frankel wins the Queen Anne by eleven lengths

Frankel opened Royal Ascot on 19 June 2012, defeating Excelebration by eleven lengths in the Queen Anne Stakes, a race renamed in 1930 to honour the racecourse's founder.
On 19 June 2012, Frankel went off in the meeting's opening race and beat Excelebration by eleven lengths in a winning time of 1:37.85. The Queen Anne Stakes had been renamed in 1930 to honour the founder of the racecourse, three centuries on from her first meeting.
