Ardwick AFC meet Everton for the first time.

Before City had a name, they already had a rivalry.
The fixture's roots stretch back to the early 1890s, when Manchester City's predecessor, Ardwick AFC, first faced Everton. Both clubs were among the pioneers of organised league football in England. Everton had been a founding member of the Football League in 1888; Ardwick joined the newly formed Second Division in 1892 before reforming as Manchester City in 1894.
