Our best tips

Weather

Summer racing means warm days, typically low to mid-twenties. Pack light layers; our hospitality suites provide complimentary beverages all day, so no queuing for bottled water.

Dress code

During Flat Race season, no formal dress code is required in the Queen Anne Enclosure, however like all Ascot meets, smart dressing is encouraged.

King George’s Day at Ascot 2025

Went to King George’s Day at Ascot on 26th July 2025. OMG! Amazing! I come every year and love it. I even feel this was the best one yet. The function band is amazing (a great variety of songs and lots of dancing), the food is excellent and the betting is awesome. Fantastic service from all the ICE staff and waiting staff at Ascot. Will most definitely be booking this again next year.

Perfect day out.

Had the most amazing experience on king George day at Ascot. The venue was brilliant, with great views of the racecourse. the staff were so professional and friendly. Food and drinks 10 out of 10. And what made the day even more special, was the live band playing around the room, and giving everyone the perfect lift for a fantastic day.

The history of

King George Racing Weekend

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is flat racing's midsummer showpiece, the only Group 1 in Britain that routinely pits the best three-year-olds against their elders over a mile and a half. Run at Ascot every July since 1951, it has produced some of the most celebrated finishes in turf history and remains the race that defines a generation of middle-distance thoroughbreds.

King George Racing Weekend at Ascot
It is the race of the century. There is no other way to describe it.
Peter O'SullevanBBC Racing Commentator, 1947–1997
1711

Queen Anne founds Ascot Racecourse.

Vintage horse racing scene from the mid-twentieth century

A chance ride past an open heath in 1711 gave Britain three centuries of royal racing.

While out riding near Windsor, Queen Anne spotted an open heath she considered ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch. The first race meeting was held on 11 August 1711, and Ascot has been a fixture of British racing ever since. The course's royal patronage, unbroken for over three centuries, would eventually make it the natural home for the sport's most prestigious midsummer contest.

1951

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is inaugurated.

Vintage horse racing with two jockeys competing

The King the race was made for never saw it run; he died the following February.

Created to mark the Festival of Britain, the race was named in honour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It was conceived as a championship occasion, open to three-year-olds and older horses, run over a mile and a half on Ascot's round course. Supreme Court, trained by Evan Williams and ridden by Charlie Elliott, won the inaugural running. The King himself was too ill to attend; he died the following February.

1955

The Queen adds her name to the race in 1952

Vintage horse racing scene at a British racecourse

A race renamed to honour a king became midsummer's definitive test for Europe's finest middle-distance horses.

Following the death of King George VI in 1952, the race was renamed the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes in 1955, reflecting the new sponsorship arrangement. Over the decades the suffix has changed with various sponsors, but the core title has endured. By the mid-1950s the race had already established itself as the definitive midsummer test, attracting the best middle-distance horses from across Europe.

1974

Dahlia becomes the first horse to win the King George twice.

Flat horse racing action on a turf track

Dahlia crossed continents to collect trophies, yet the King George was the race she made her own. Twice.

The brilliant filly Dahlia, trained in France by Maurice Zilber, won the King George in both 1973 and 1974, becoming the first horse to win the race twice. Her victories underlined the international character of the contest. Dahlia was a genuine globetrotter who also won in America, Canada, and Ireland, and her back-to-back King George triumphs set a standard that would stand for over two decades.

1975

Grundy and Bustino produce the race of the century.

Close finish in a horse race with jockeys driving hard

Half a length and a course record; neither horse ever ran the same way again.

The 1975 King George is the race against which all others are measured. Grundy, the three-year-old Derby winner trained by Peter Walwyn, took on Bustino, the older horse and previous year's St Leger winner, in a duel that pushed both animals to their absolute limits. Grundy prevailed by half a length in a course record time. Neither horse was the same again. It remains the single most celebrated flat race ever run in Britain.

2005

Ascot closes for a £220 million transformation.

The modern Ascot Racecourse grandstand

Ascot's £220 million makeover sent the King George to Newbury for a season; Azamour filled the exile rather well.

Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for a complete redevelopment. The 2005 King George was held at Newbury, with Azamour winning under Mick Kinane. When Ascot reopened in June 2006, the new grandstand, designed by HOK Sport, offered a dramatically modern setting for the race. The sweeping steel and glass structure gave racegoers uninterrupted views of the entire round course for the first time.

2017

Enable begins her record-breaking King George reign.

Horses and jockeys racing under a clear blue sky on a summer day

Three King George victories. No horse in history has matched it.

Enable, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori, won the King George as a three-year-old in 2017, adding it to her Oaks and Irish Oaks victories earlier that season. She would go on to win the Arc de Triomphe that autumn. It was the start of a remarkable association with the race: Enable returned to win the King George again in 2019 and 2020, becoming the first horse in history to win it three times.

2024

The King George enters its eighth decade as flat racing's midsummer championship.

Crowds at Ascot Racecourse on a busy raceday

Youth versus experience: the King George's genius lies in making Champions prove it all over again.

Now branded as part of the King George Diamond Weekend, the race sits at the heart of a two-day festival at Ascot in late July. The Saturday card builds towards the main race, with supporting Group races and a full hospitality programme. Auguste Rodin, trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, won the 2024 renewal. The race continues to draw the finest middle-distance horses in training, and its unique format, pitting the Classic generation against proven older campaigners, ensures it remains one of the most compelling contests in world racing.
