Our best tips

Weather

Summer racing means warm days, typically low to mid-twenties. Pack light layers; our hospitality suites provide complimentary beverages all day, so no queuing for bottled water.

Dress code

Both restaurants carry a formal dress code: gentlemen wear a jacket with a collared shirt and tie, and ladies dress for a smart occasion, with hats encouraged. Tailored shorts are permitted; trainers and sportswear are not.

King George’s Day at Ascot 2025

Went to King George’s Day at Ascot on 26th July 2025. OMG! Amazing! I come every year and love it. I even feel this was the best one yet. The function band is amazing (a great variety of songs and lots of dancing), the food is excellent and the betting is awesome. Fantastic service from all the ICE staff and waiting staff at Ascot. Will most definitely be booking this again next year.

Perfect day out.

Had the most amazing experience on king George day at Ascot. The venue was brilliant, with great views of the racecourse. the staff were so professional and friendly. Food and drinks 10 out of 10. And what made the day even more special, was the live band playing around the room, and giving everyone the perfect lift for a fantastic day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ascot enforces enclosure-specific dress codes. For both the Parade Ring Restaurant and the Furlong Restaurant, gentlemen wear a jacket with a collared shirt and tie, and ladies dress for a smart occasion, with hats encouraged. We'll send the full requirements for your chosen package.

Two packages: the Parade Ring Restaurant overlooking the saddling area, or the Furlong Restaurant. The Furlong Restaurant also comes with a live-music option that keeps the evening going after racing.

Parade Ring Restaurant puts you next to the pre-race theatre as horses are saddled. The Furlong Restaurant leans social, especially the live-music version that runs on after the last race.

Yes. Alongside your hospitality at Ascot, we can build in accommodation, transfers and concierge support around the weekend. Tell us what you need and we'll shape it.

The King George weekend is one of the summer's biggest fixtures and hospitality fills early. Get in touch as soon as your dates are firm, the earlier the better for Parade Ring and Furlong Restaurant places.

We bundle the hospitality, the accommodation and the transfers into one weekend. You turn up, we've handled the logistics, and you've got one of us on hand if plans shift.

The history of King George Racing Weekend at Ascot

The history of King George Racing Weekend

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is flat racing's midsummer showpiece, the only Group 1 in Britain that routinely pits the best three-year-olds against their elders over a mile and a half. Run every July since 1951, at Ascot but for a single year at Newbury in 2005, it has produced some of the most celebrated finishes in turf history and remains the race that defines a generation of middle-distance thoroughbreds.

1711

Queen Anne founds Ascot Racecourse.

Vintage horse racing scene from the mid-twentieth century

Three centuries of unbroken royal patronage is what later made Ascot the obvious home for a race named after a king and queen.

While out riding near Windsor, Queen Anne spotted an open heath she thought ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch. The first race meeting was held there on 11 August 1711, and Ascot has been a fixture of British racing ever since.

1951

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is inaugurated.

Vintage horse racing with two jockeys competing

The King the race was named for never saw it run. He died the following February.

Created to mark the Festival of Britain, the race was named in honour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It was open to three-year-olds and older horses and run over a mile and a half on Ascot's round course, a championship test from the start. Supreme Court, trained by Evan Williams and ridden by Charlie Elliott, won the inaugural running, and illness kept the King away.

1952

The Festival of Britain suffix is dropped for good.

Vintage horse racing scene at a British racecourse

The race had been built around a one-off national occasion, and from its second year it had to stand on the racing alone.

Its first running in 1951 was titled the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Festival of Britain Stakes, though it carried both royal names from the start. The commemorative suffix came off once the Festival closed. By the mid-1950s the race was already drawing the best middle-distance horses from across Europe.

1974

Dahlia becomes the first horse to win the King George twice.

Flat horse racing action on a turf track

It was the first sign that the King George had become a race Europe aimed at rather than a domestic championship.

The filly was trained in France by Maurice Zilber, and she was a genuine globetrotter who also won in America, Canada and Ireland. No horse managed the King George double again until Swain in 1997 and 1998.

1975

Grundy and Bustino produce the race of the century.

Close finish in a horse race with jockeys driving hard

Grundy beat Bustino by half a length in course-record time, and neither horse ever won again.

Grundy was the three-year-old Derby winner, trained by Peter Walwyn. Bustino, a year older, had won the previous season's St Leger. The pair fought out the finish stride for stride.

2005

Ascot closes for a £185 million transformation.

The modern Ascot Racecourse grandstand

The rebuild is why the grandstand now looks onto the whole of the round course, and why the 2005 running had to move to Newbury.

Ascot closed in September 2004 and reopened in June 2006. The 2005 King George went to Newbury, where Azamour won under Mick Kinane. The new grandstand is a steel and glass structure designed by HOK Sport.

2017

Enable begins her record-breaking King George reign.

Horses and jockeys racing under a clear blue sky on a summer day

Only two horses had ever won the King George twice. Enable won it three times.

She took it as a three-year-old in 2017, adding it to the Oaks and Irish Oaks she had won earlier that season. John Gosden trained her, Frankie Dettori rode her, and she won the Arc de Triomphe that autumn. She came back to win the King George again in 2019 and in 2020.

2024

Goliath beats the Derby winner at 25/1.

Crowds at Ascot Racecourse on a busy raceday

The race now anchors a two-day meeting in late July, and it still turns on the Classic generation meeting proven older horses.

Goliath was trained by Francis-Henri Graffard and ridden by Christophe Soumillon. Auguste Rodin, that year's Derby winner, could finish only fifth. Supporting Group races build towards the main race on the Saturday afternoon.
