Newcastle were already two years old before City had even settled on a name.

The Abu Dhabi United Group, led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, completed their takeover of Manchester City in September 2008. Without that result at Newcastle, the most famous finish in Premier League history would never have happened.

In October 2021, a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium completed their purchase of Newcastle United, making the club the wealthiest in world football by ownership. The parallels with City's own transformation were immediate and obvious. Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle returned to the Champions League in 2023 for the first time in 20 years. Fixtures between the two sides now carry the weight of a genuine emerging rivalry: two state-backed projects, both building towards sustained dominance.

Only the second English club ever to lift three trophies in a single season; City then made history again the very next year.

Manchester City won the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in 2022-23, becoming only the second English club to complete the treble. They went on to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title in 2023-24. Newcastle, meanwhile, qualified for the Champions League in 2023 and reached the Carabao Cup final, losing to Manchester United. The fixture at the Etihad now represents a meeting of two clubs with vast resources and serious ambitions, a contest that looks set to define the next decade of English football.
