Two clubs born from the same era take shape in the north of England.

Newcastle were already two years old before City had even settled on a name.
Manchester City were formally established as such in 1894, having previously played as Ardwick AFC. Newcastle United had formed in 1892 from a merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. Both clubs joined the Football League in the 1890s and first met in league competition during the 1898-99 First Division season. The fixture quickly became a regular feature of the English football calendar.
