St. Mark's is founded in the shadow of Manchester's mills.

A church, two wardens, and one woman kept a generation of mill workers out of the pub.
The club that would become Manchester City was formed as St. Mark's (West Gorton) in 1880 by Anna Connell and two wardens of St. Mark's Church. The aim was straightforward: give young men in the industrial east of Manchester something to do besides drink. The club became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, then reformed as Manchester City in 1894 after financial difficulties forced a restructure.
