A church cricket team plants the seed of a rivalry.

Before Liverpool existed, Everton had already made Anfield home.
St Domingo's Methodist Chapel in Everton formed a cricket club that needed a winter sport to keep members together. They chose football. By 1879 the club had renamed itself Everton FC, and by 1884 it had settled at a ground on Anfield Road. The club that would become Liverpool did not yet exist, but the stage was being set.
