Kirkdale station is the nearest rail stop, around a 15-minute walk. Liverpool Lime Street connects to the national rail network.
Taxis are plentiful from Liverpool city centre. The journey to Goodison Park takes around 15 minutes outside peak traffic.
Arriva bus routes 19, 20, and 21 run from Liverpool city centre to the ground. Services are frequent on match days.
The Merseyside derby is English football's original family feud. Born from a rent dispute in 1892 that split one club into two, Everton and Liverpool have shared a city, a postcode, and an intense rivalry for over 130 years. It is the fixture most played in English top-flight history, and the only derby where families routinely sit together in opposing colours.

Before Liverpool existed, Everton had already made Anfield home.
St Domingo's Methodist Chapel in Everton formed a cricket club that needed a winter sport to keep members together. They chose football. By 1879 the club had renamed itself Everton FC, and by 1884 it had settled at a ground on Anfield Road. The club that would become Liverpool did not yet exist, but the stage was being set.
A landlord's greed left him with an empty ground; he simply founded a new club to fill it.
Everton's landlord at Anfield, John Houlding, raised the rent and attempted to take control of the club. The majority of Everton's members refused, uprooted the club, and moved across Stanley Park to a new ground at Goodison Park. Houlding, left with an empty stadium and no team, founded Liverpool FC to fill it. One club became two, separated by a park you can walk across in five minutes.
Everton drew first blood in the rivalry, handing Liverpool a 3-0 defeat at Goodison in their very first league meeting.
On 13 October 1894, Everton hosted Liverpool in their first league meeting at Goodison Park. Everton won 3-0 in front of a crowd eager to see the new rivalry play out. Liverpool, still finding their feet in the First Division, would not have to wait long for revenge. The fixture quickly became the most anticipated date on the Merseyside calendar.
Sixty league goals in a season; a record that no one, nearly a century on, has come close to matching.
William Ralph 'Dixie' Dean's 1927-28 season remains one of football's great individual achievements. His 60 league goals in a single season is a record that still stands. Dean scored freely in derbies throughout his career, netting 19 goals against Liverpool in total. He remains the all-time top scorer in the fixture's history and an enduring symbol of Everton's identity.
Eleven league titles in one decade; Merseyside did not share English football so much as own it.
Everton and Liverpool met at Wembley for the 1984 League Cup Final, the first time the two clubs had faced each other at the national stadium. The match finished 0-0, with Liverpool winning the replay at Maine Road. It was a taste of what was to come: the 1980s belonged to both clubs, who between them dominated English football and won 11 league titles in the decade.

Liverpool beat Everton 3-1 in the 1986 FA Cup Final, completing the league and cup double. Everton had finished second in the league to Liverpool that season, making it a particularly bitter pill. The match cemented the 1980s as the golden era of Merseyside football, with both clubs regularly competing for the biggest prizes in the English game.

The 1989 FA Cup Final between Everton and Liverpool came just weeks after the Hillsborough disaster, in which 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives. Everton fans had stood shoulder to shoulder with their neighbours in grief, and the final was played in an atmosphere unlike any other. Liverpool won 3-2 after extra time, with Ian Rush scoring twice. The match remains one of the most emotionally charged in English football history.
The 'friendly derby' had more red cards to its name than any other Premier League fixture.
By 2010, the Merseyside derby had become the most ill-disciplined fixture in Premier League history, producing more red cards than any other. The 'friendly derby' tag, earned in the 1980s when families from both sides shared the terraces, was looking increasingly outdated. Tackles flew in, tempers frayed, and the fixture took on a harder edge that reflected the growing gap between the clubs' fortunes.

The 2024-25 season marks Everton's final campaign at Goodison Park before the club moves to its new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock on the Liverpool waterfront. The last Merseyside derby at Goodison, a ground that has hosted the fixture since 1892, carries enormous emotional weight. Over 130 years of shared history between two clubs separated by a park will continue at a new address, but the old ground's farewell adds a layer of significance to every remaining fixture played there.
