St. Mark's is born in the shadow of Manchester's mills.

A church, two wardens, and one determined woman stood between Manchester's youth and the gangs.
Manchester City's origins lie in St. Mark's (West Gorton), a church cricket and football club formed in 1880 by Anna Connell and two wardens of St. Mark's Church. The club was intended to steer young men in the industrial east Manchester parish away from gang culture. They became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, then Manchester City Football Club in 1894.
