Our best tips

Weather

Monaco in May averages 15–23°C. There is a decent chance of rain, so pack a compact waterproof just in case.

Dress code

There is no formal dress code at most circuits, but smart casual is the norm in hospitality areas. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as paddock and grandstand areas involve plenty of ground to cover.

Don't forget

Bring sunscreen and a hat if racing in a warm climate. Ear protection is also worth considering, particularly in the grandstands closest to the track.

Grand Prix de Monaco Historic 2026

A fabulous event in glorious Monaco. Overall a well arranged event with a great hotel and on-going Imperial Events support/advice.However, not all was great:1. Minimal refreshments arranged at private hanger departure and flight. We had been travelling for 4 hours in the middle of the night to get to Stansted assuming their would be some subsistence available when we reached the airport. The private departure lounge although lovely offered drinks only. The plane offered crisps and chocolate only. We finally found somewhere to eat in Monaco at 4pm in the afternoon - This was very poor organisation2. I requested further information from the Imperial Team in the hotel on 2 separate occasions and was advised "we will get back to you" - They never did - We just had to make do and sort things for ourselves - Not the definition of executive luxury service I expect to be honest.

Grand Prix of Monaco Historique

The events themselves are always great. The staff you provide are also consistently of high quality. In the case of Monaco GP Historique we felt there could have been more information provided. For example, we should have been told there would be no food available at the Stanstead private lounge going out. Most of your customers were ready to purchase a breakfast on arrival. The overall experience, however, was superb. Great accommodation, well organised transport, good food and a great event.

The history of Monaco Historique Grand Prix

The history of Monaco Historique Grand Prix

The Monaco Historique Grand Prix sends pre-war Bugattis and 1980s turbocharged F1 machinery through the same unforgiving streets that have hosted motor racing since 1929. Organised biennially by the Automobile Club de Monaco, the event transforms the principality into a living museum of motorsport, with seven decades of racing cars tackling the harbour chicane, the tunnel, and the climb to Casino Square. It is, quite simply, the finest historic racing event on the calendar.

The Monaco Grand Prix is born on the streets of Monte Carlo.

Classic racing car from the early era of grand prix motorsport

A Bugatti, borrowed streets, and one bold vision; Noghès and Grover-Williams wrote the blueprint Monte Carlo still follows.

On 14 April 1929, the first Monaco Grand Prix took place on a 3.18 km circuit winding through the streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine. The race was the brainchild of Antony Noghès, president of the Automobile Club de Monaco, and was won by William Grover-Williams in a Bugatti Type 35B. The tight, twisting layout through public roads established a template that would endure for nearly a century.

Monaco joins the inaugural Formula One World Championship.

The famous tunnel section of the Circuit de Monaco

From harbour to hillside to casino, Monaco made itself indispensable to Formula One from the very first season.

The Monaco Grand Prix was included in the first ever Formula One World Championship season in 1950, cementing its status as one of the sport's cornerstone fixtures. Juan Manuel Fangio won that first championship race in Monaco. The circuit's unique character, threading between harbour, hillside and casino, made it an instant favourite with drivers and spectators alike, and it would become one of only a handful of races to feature on the calendar almost every year since.

1960s

Graham Hill becomes 'Mr Monaco' with five victories.

Five victories between 1963 and 1969; Hill did not merely race Monaco, he owned it.

Graham Hill won the Monaco Grand Prix five times between 1963 and 1969, earning the nickname 'Mr Monaco.' His mastery of the tight street circuit was unmatched in his era. The cars of this period, with their front-engined and then rear-engined designs, would later become some of the most sought-after machines in historic racing, forming the backbone of the Historique celebration's earliest grids.

1997
1997

The first Grand Prix de Monaco Historique takes to the streets.

Historic racing cars on the Monaco street circuit during the Historique Grand Prix

Historic cars, the full Monaco circuit, held every two years; the Automobile Club de Monaco knew exactly what they were doing from the very first race in 1997.

The Automobile Club de Monaco organised the first Grand Prix de Monaco Historique in 1997. The meeting was conceived as a celebration of the circuit's extraordinary racing heritage, bringing together historic racing cars to compete on the full grand prix circuit. From the outset, the occasion was planned as a biennial fixture, held every two years in the weeks before the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix.

1999

The second edition confirms the Historique as a permanent fixture.

Larger grids and broader European interest confirmed that serious historic racing had found its natural home on the streets of Monaco.

The 1999 running of the Historique drew larger grids and growing international interest. Collectors and gentleman drivers from across Europe entered cars spanning the pre-war era through to 1970s Formula One machinery. The occasion's success in its early editions proved there was serious appetite for competitive historic racing on the world's most famous street circuit.

2000s

The grid expands to cover seven decades of racing history.

Multiple classic racing cars competing during the Monaco Historique Grand Prix

Seven decades of racing history, each era given its own moment on the most storied street circuit in the world.

Through the 2000s, the Historique steadily expanded its race categories. What began with a handful of grids grew to encompass cars from the 1920s through to the mid-1980s, organised into distinct series: pre-war grand prix cars, front-engined Formula One machines, rear-engined cars of the early 1960s, sports cars, and multiple eras of ground-effect and turbo F1 machinery. Each category races separately, giving every era its moment on the Monaco stage.

2012
2012

Record entries and global television coverage raise the profile.

Grid places were rarer than the cars themselves; by 2012, demand had simply outgrown the paddock.

By the early 2010s, the Monaco Historique had become the most prestigious historic racing occasion in the world. The 2012 edition attracted record entries, with demand for grid places far exceeding availability. International television coverage brought the spectacle to a global audience, and the paddock became a destination in its own right, with car values in the tens of millions.

The 13th edition returns to full strength after the pandemic.

Eight categories, from pre-war grand prix cars to early-1980s Formula One; the entry lists read like a catalogue of the world's finest private collections.

The 2022 Monaco Historique marked the 13th running of the occasion and a return to full grids after the reduced 2021 edition held in the wake of the pandemic. Eight race categories covered everything from pre-war grand prix cars (Race A) through to 1981-1985 Formula One machinery (Race G). The meeting confirmed its place as the undisputed highlight of the historic racing calendar, with entry lists that read like a catalogue of the world's finest private collections.

Million-pound machines raced in anger; the Historique offers what modern Formula One simply cannot.

The 14th edition of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique took place in May 2024, continuing the biennial tradition. The meeting remains the pinnacle of historic motorsport, where cars worth millions of pounds are raced in anger through the same barriers and chicanes that challenge modern Formula One drivers. For those fortunate enough to attend, it offers something the contemporary grand prix cannot: the raw sound and mechanical theatre of racing as it used to be.
