A medieval knight's name, a streetlamp, and a handful of schoolboys; that is all it took to start one of football's great clubs.

On 5 September 1882, a group of boys from Hotspur Cricket Club and the local grammar school founded Hotspur Football Club beneath a streetlamp on Tottenham High Road. They adopted the name of Harry Hotspur, the medieval knight Sir Henry Percy, and within three years had added 'Tottenham' to distinguish themselves from another London club called Hotspur.

Spurs lifted the FA Cup in 1901 as a non-league club, the only such side to do so since the Football League was formed.

Brighton & Hove Albion were established on 24 June 1901, rising from the ashes of the disbanded Brighton United. The Seagulls settled at the Goldstone Ground in Hove, which would remain their home for nearly a century. That same year, Spurs became the only non-league club to win the FA Cup since the formation of the Football League, beating Sheffield United in the final.

Spurs were already a Football League side when they first crossed paths with Brighton in the FA Cup; the two clubs were worlds apart in standing.

The two clubs began meeting in FA Cup ties during the early 1900s, with Spurs already established in the First Division following their election to the Football League in 1908. Brighton, meanwhile, were plying their trade in the Southern League. Under Bill Nicholson, Tottenham won both the First Division title and the FA Cup in 1960-61, becoming the first club to complete the Double since Aston Villa in 1897. The sale of the Goldstone Ground by a controversial board left Brighton homeless and on the brink of going out of business. The club were forced to groundshare at Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium, 70 miles from Brighton, before eventually moving to the temporary Withdean Stadium in 1999. It was the lowest point in the club's history, a world away from the Premier League fixtures with Spurs that lay ahead.

Thirty-four years away, then straight into the spotlight: Brighton's very first Premier League home match, against Spurs.

Chris Hughton guided Brighton to promotion to the Premier League in 2016-17, ending a 34-year absence from the top division. The Seagulls, now playing at the purpose-built Falmer Stadium (known commercially as the Amex), hosted Spurs in their very first Premier League home match on 22 September 2017. It was a statement occasion, though Spurs won 1-0.
