Schoolboys huddled beneath a street lamp; from that modest gathering, a football institution was born.

On 5 September 1882, a group of boys from Hotspur Cricket Club and the local grammar school formed Hotspur Football Club in Tottenham, north London. The name was inspired by Harry Hotspur, the medieval knight Sir Henry Percy. Within three years they had added 'Tottenham' to distinguish themselves from another club called Hotspur, and the foundations of one of English football's most storied institutions were laid.

Born beneath the glass roof that already knew FA Cup glory, Palace arrived with history baked in from day one.

Crystal Palace Football Club was founded on 10 September 1905 at the Crystal Palace Exhibition building in south London, a venue that had hosted FA Cup Finals since 1895. The club's early identity was inseparable from that grand glass structure. They joined the Southern League and quickly established themselves, setting the stage for over a century of encounters with Spurs.

Palace were barely a Football League club when they first faced an FA Cup-winning Spurs side.

Crystal Palace joined the Football League in 1920 as founding members of the new Third Division. Their first league meeting with Spurs came in the 1920-21 season, though the two clubs had faced each other in various competitions prior to this. Tottenham, by then an established First Division side and 1901 FA Cup winners, were the more senior outfit. The fixture would become a regular feature whenever both clubs occupied the same division.

Palace's maiden top-flight season turned familiar London fixtures into something far sharper; the underdog label no longer applied.

Under Bert Head's management, Crystal Palace won promotion to the First Division for the first time in 1969. This brought regular fixtures against Spurs, who were in the midst of their post-Bill Nicholson era. The meetings between the two London clubs took on a new edge, with Palace no longer the plucky underdog from the lower leagues but a genuine top-flight competitor.

The 1990 FA Cup semi-final remains one of the defining moments in this fixture's history. Crystal Palace, managed by Steve Coppell, beat Tottenham 4-3 at Wembley in a breathless encounter. Gary Lineker scored for Spurs, but Palace's attacking verve proved too much. They went on to face Manchester United in the final, drawing 3-3 before losing the replay. For Palace supporters, that semi-final victory over Spurs remains a cherished memory.

Both clubs were present at the birth of the Premier League; the only uncertainty was whether they would meet again the following season.

The formation of the Premier League in 1992 brought a new commercial dimension to English football. Tottenham were founding members, while Palace were also present in that inaugural season. The fixture continued to produce entertaining football, though Palace's yo-yo years between divisions meant the meetings were not always guaranteed. When they did occur, they rarely disappointed.

Palace's physicality made White Hart Lane an uncomfortable fixture for Spurs year after year.

Following their promotion in 2013, Crystal Palace under successive managers including Tony Pulis, Alan Pardew, and later Roy Hodgson, cemented their place in the Premier League. This meant annual meetings with Spurs became a reliable part of the calendar. Palace's direct, physical style under various managers often proved awkward for Tottenham, and the Eagles picked up some notable results at White Hart Lane during this period.

The fixture continues to produce memorable moments in the modern era. Spurs, captained by Son Heung-min, and Palace, revitalised under various managers including Oliver Glasner, have maintained the tradition of competitive, unpredictable encounters. The two clubs have now met well over 100 times in all competitions, with Tottenham holding the historical advantage but Palace consistently proving they are no respecters of reputation.
