Villa had already lifted the FA Cup in 1887, making them the more established side when Newton Heath joined the First Division in 1892.

Newton Heath, the club that would become Manchester United, entered the Football League First Division in 1892. That season they shared the top flight with Aston Villa, who were already established as one of the country's dominant forces, having won the league title in 1894 and the FA Cup in 1887. Manchester United, renamed from Newton Heath in 1902, moved into their new home at Old Trafford on 19 February 1910. The ground, designed by Archibald Leitch, could hold around 80,000 spectators. On 4 May 1957, Aston Villa beat Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley before 99,225 spectators. Peter McParland scored both goals for Villa, with Tommy Taylor replying for United. It was Villa's seventh FA Cup triumph. For Matt Busby's brilliant young side, soon to be devastated by the Munich air disaster the following February, it was a painful near-miss in what proved to be the last cup final for several of those players.

For Villa, managed by Martin O'Neill, it was a painful reminder of how close they had come to silverware during a promising period under his stewardship.
