Windsor Racecourse opened in 1866 on a site beside the River Thames, just a short walk from Windsor Castle. The course was laid out in an unusual figure-of-eight configuration, a quirk of the available land that remains its defining feature to this day. Both flat and National Hunt racing were staged from the outset, drawing crowds from London and the surrounding Home Counties.

The Paddington line did as much for Windsor's reputation as any thoroughbred on the track.

By the 1880s, Windsor had carved out a reliable niche in the racing calendar. The railway connection made it easily accessible from Paddington, and the course's riverside setting gave it a social appeal that extended well beyond the racing itself. Meetings attracted a broad mix of serious punters and day-trippers drawn by the combination of sport and scenery.

Windsor's turf fell silent for years, requisitioned by war before racing quietly resumed where it had left off.

Like most British racecourses, Windsor suspended racing during the Second World War. The site was requisitioned for the war effort, and it would be several years before the course returned to full operation. When racing resumed in the post-war period, Windsor picked up largely where it had left off, staging both flat and jump fixtures throughout the year.

Windsor invented evening racing in Britain; Londoners could watch a full card by the Thames before the last light faded.

Windsor pioneered the concept of evening racing in Britain, and its Monday night meetings became a signature fixture. The format proved enormously popular, offering Londoners a chance to enjoy a full card of racing after work, with the Thames glinting in the background as the sun dropped. These meetings remain central to Windsor's identity and draw some of the largest crowds of the summer flat season.

Over 130 years of jump racing at Windsor ended quietly in 1998, traded in for summer flat fixtures.

Windsor staged its final National Hunt meeting in 1998, bringing to an end over 130 years of jump racing at the course. The decision reflected a strategic shift towards flat racing, where Windsor's summer evening programme had become its strongest commercial asset. From this point on, the course focused exclusively on flat fixtures, running from April through to October.

Arena Leisure transformed Windsor into far more than a racecourse; concerts, fireworks, and corporate gatherings joined the racing programme.

Arena Leisure PLC (later Arena Racing Company) acquired Windsor Racecourse and invested in upgrading the facilities. The grandstand and hospitality areas were modernised, and the course expanded its programme of themed race nights and social occasions. Windsor positioned itself as a versatile venue, hosting concerts, fireworks displays, and corporate experiences alongside its core racing programme.

Windsor finally had a Pattern race worth building a summer programme around.

Windsor's flagship race, the Winter Hill Stakes, was upgraded to Group 3 status, confirming the course's place in the upper tier of British flat racing. Run over a mile and two furlongs, the race regularly attracts high-quality middle-distance horses and has been won by some notable names. The elevation gave Windsor a genuine Pattern race to anchor its summer programme.

Royal Windsor Racecourse continues to stage around 30 fixtures per year, with its Monday evening meetings remaining the headline attraction. The course broadcasts on Sky Sports Racing and draws strong fields across its flat programme from April to October. Its unique figure-of-eight layout, riverside setting, and proximity to Windsor Castle make it one of the most distinctive and accessible racecourses in the south of England.
