A draw between two obscure, struggling clubs in 1894; few fixtures have aged quite so well.

On 13 October 1894, Newton Heath (the club that would become Manchester United) hosted Woolwich Arsenal in a Second Division fixture. The match ended 3–3. Neither club was yet a household name; Arsenal were still based south of the Thames in Plumstead, and Newton Heath were a struggling railway workers' team in financial difficulty. Nobody present could have guessed what this fixture would become.

Fifth in the Second Division, yet somehow promoted above Spurs; ambition has always worn red.

After the First World War, the Football League expanded the First Division from 20 to 22 clubs. Arsenal, who had finished only fifth in the Second Division in the last pre-war season, were controversially elected to the top flight ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. The move to Highbury in 1913 had already signalled the club's ambition. Now they were in the same division as Manchester United, and the fixture took on a new significance.

With Old Trafford still bomb-damaged from the war, Manchester United played their home matches at Maine Road. The fixture between these two clubs was already one of the biggest draws in English football. In the late 1940s and 1950s, both clubs were rebuilding. Matt Busby was assembling the team that would become the Busby Babes, while Arsenal under Tom Whittaker won the league in 1948 and 1953. The rivalry was fierce but respectful, shaped by the shared experience of wartime loss.

When Arsène Wenger was appointed Arsenal manager in September 1996, the English press asked: "Arsène who?" Alex Ferguson had already won four league titles and a European Cup Winners' Cup. Within two seasons, Wenger's Arsenal had won the Double, and the most intense managerial rivalry in English football history was underway. The fixture became the Premier League's marquee occasion, a proxy war between two philosophies of football and two very different personalities.

The 1999 FA Cup semi-final replay at Villa Park produced one of the most iconic goals in English football. With the score at 1–1 in extra time, Ryan Giggs picked up a misplaced Arsenal pass in his own half, dribbled past four defenders, and smashed the ball into the roof of the net. He celebrated by whipping off his shirt and swinging it above his head. United went on to win the Treble. Arsenal were left wondering what might have been.

Forty-nine matches unbeaten, ended in ninety minutes. Then someone threw food at Sir Alex.

On 24 October 2004, Arsenal arrived at Old Trafford with a 49-match unbeaten run in the league. United won 2–0, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney scoring. The aftermath was explosive. A fracas in the tunnel reportedly involved food being thrown at Ferguson, earning the match the nickname "The Battle of the Buffet." It was the moment the rivalry reached its absolute peak, raw and personal in a way English football had rarely seen.

Vieira's final touch in an Arsenal shirt was the kick that won the Cup.

The 2005 FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff finished 0–0 after extra time. Arsenal won the penalty shootout 5–4, with Patrick Vieira converting the decisive kick past Roy Carroll. Arsenal left Highbury after 93 years and moved to the 60,704-capacity Emirates Stadium in Ashburton Grove. The new ground transformed the matchday experience and the club's commercial power. Hosting Manchester United at the Emirates became one of the most sought-after fixtures in the Premier League calendar. The stadium's corporate facilities, including private boxes and premium lounges, made it one of the finest venues in European football for hospitality.
