Woolwich Arsenal and Ardwick meet for the first time.

A single goal at Plumstead in 1893 planted the seed of English football's most compelling rivalry.
On 11 November 1893, Woolwich Arsenal hosted Ardwick (Manchester City's predecessor) in a Football League Second Division match at the Manor Ground in Plumstead. Arsenal won 1–0. Neither club could have imagined the fixture would still be contested well into the next century, let alone that it would come to define an era of English football.
