Getting around
Kirkdale station is the nearest rail stop, around a 15-minute walk. Liverpool Lime Street connects to the national rail network.
Taxis are plentiful from Liverpool city centre. The journey to Goodison Park takes around 15 minutes outside peak traffic.
Arriva bus routes 19, 20, and 21 run from Liverpool city centre to the ground. Services are frequent on match days.
Everton are one of English football's founding institutions, a club whose roots stretch back to a Methodist chapel in 1878 and whose nine league titles place them among the most decorated sides in the country. Bournemouth's story is altogether different: a south coast club founded in 1899 that spent the best part of a century in the lower divisions before an extraordinary rise to the Premier League in 2015. The two sides rarely met in competitive football until Bournemouth's promotion brought them together as top-flight rivals, making each encounter a collision of old establishment and new ambition.

A Methodist chapel congregation kicked off what would become one of English football's great clubs.
Everton Football Club traces its origins to St Domingo FC, formed by the congregation of St Domingo Methodist Chapel in the Everton district of Liverpool. The club adopted the name Everton in 1879 and quickly became one of the strongest sides in the north-west, playing at various grounds before settling at Anfield in 1884.
Everton's rent row with a single landlord inadvertently gave the world Liverpool FC.
Everton were one of twelve clubs invited to form the Football League in 1888, the world's first league competition. They won their first league championship in 1891, establishing themselves as a major force in the English game. A rent dispute with Anfield's landlord, John Houlding, led the club to move across Stanley Park to a new ground at Goodison Park in 1892. Houlding, left with an empty stadium, founded Liverpool FC.
Everton were already champions when Boscombe FC drew their first breath in 1899; the gap between these clubs could scarcely have been wider.
While Everton were already league champions, Bournemouth came into existence in 1899 as Boscombe FC. The club joined the Football League's Third Division South in 1923 and spent decades in the lower tiers of English football. Renamed Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in 1923, and later AFC Bournemouth in 1971, the Cherries were a world away from the Toffees for most of the twentieth century.
Sixty goals in a single season, sealed with a hat-trick on the final day; a record that has never looked like falling.
William Ralph "Dixie" Dean's 60 league goals in the 1927-28 season remains one of football's most untouchable records. Dean scored a hat-trick on the final day of the season against Arsenal to reach the milestone, firing Everton to the First Division title. His total of 383 goals in 433 appearances for the club has never been surpassed.
Heysel robbed Kendall's double-winning side of a shot at Europe's biggest prize.
The mid-1980s were Everton's golden era under Howard Kendall. The 1984-85 season brought the First Division title and the European Cup Winners' Cup, with a side featuring Peter Reid, Neville Southall, and Kevin Sheedy. They added a second title in 1987. The Heysel disaster and subsequent ban on English clubs from European competition denied this exceptional team the chance to compete for the European Cup.
Bournemouth's 2015 Championship triumph made Premier League meetings with Everton an entirely new fixture in both clubs' histories.
Under Eddie Howe, Bournemouth completed one of the most remarkable rises in English football history, winning the Championship in 2014-15 to reach the top flight for the first time. This brought regular fixtures against Everton for the first time. The two clubs had rarely met in competitive football before Bournemouth's promotion, making these Premier League encounters a genuinely new chapter in both clubs' histories.
From defeat to dominance in just three months; Bournemouth arrived at Goodison as tourists in 2015 and left as conquerors in 2016.
Bournemouth's first Premier League visit to Goodison Park in November 2015 ended in a 3-1 defeat, but the Cherries quickly found their feet. In February 2016, they secured a 2-0 victory at Goodison, their first competitive win on Merseyside against Everton. It was a sign that Bournemouth were no longer simply making up the numbers in the top flight.
Eight points deducted, one season saved; that Bournemouth victory in March was the margin between survival and the drop.
The 2023-24 season tested Everton's resolve like few others. The club was docked a total of eight points across two separate Financial Fair Play penalties, leaving them in a desperate relegation battle. Sean Dyche's side showed remarkable resilience, and a crucial 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at Goodison Park in March 2024 proved vital in their survival. The Toffees secured their Premier League status on the final day of the season.
